Hallooooo Scribblers! Happy Sunday!
Well, autumn seems to have finally arrived here…single digit temperatures overnight and the most glorious blue skies and crisp, fresh - one might even say ‘bracing’ - air. I’m here for ALL of it. This is absolutely my most favourite of the seasons and I’m soaking up every last moment of it…hence my rather sparse publication record for this month, thus far. Oops.
But never mind! Here we are, another Sunday, another opportunity to play with pen and paper and our imagination. Last week,
reported the spawning of an entire first draft just from that single, one-line prompt!See what can happen when you let your hand start moving? Magic!
Right…today’s prompt is a story-starter…but first, as always, the invitation:
Even if you don’t normally identify as a writer, I invite you to have a noodle in a notebook or on a scrap of paper…just to see what might happen.
Write by hand, if you’re able.
Give yourself a time limit.
No edits.
No second thoughts.
Let your pen take a walk across the page.
Ready?
Let’s begin.
The wind lashed the rain against the window and sent a pile of fallen leaves spinning in a furious, mini-cyclone on the front porch. It would be over in less than an hour, but the last hour had always been the most dangerous.
This is another one that I think can go in a couple of different directions. Which to choose? Go spooky and ominous, or light-hearted and silly? You get to decide!
Try - using this as an exercise in creating atmosphere..focus on description and setting a certain mood. Explore how your word choice invokes certain mental images and feelings.
Or - experiment with reversals….start one way (spooky), then pivot, surprising and delighting your reader along the way.
Mostly, just have fun with it!
As always, feel free to share your work…
Until next time…happy writing!!
