Hallooooo scribblers!
Apologies for missing last week (did anyone even notice? I suspect not!), as I shared in last Saturday’s post, I’ve had my head up my backside…been very busy with the final stages of publishing Project Hazel and the days are all blending into one another. To make up for the missed episode, I’ll offer two options today for your scribbling delight.
First though, for the newbies (welcome aboard!), the invitation:
Even if you don’t identify as a writer, I invite you to have a noodle in a notebook or on a scrap of paper…just to see what might happen.
If you absolutely have no interest - fair enough - you can toggle your preference in the manage subscriptions portion of your settings.
Write by hand, if you’re able.
Give yourself a time limit.
No edits.
No second thoughts.
Let your pen take a walk across the page.
Ready?
Let’s begin.
First up…an image.
As a small child, one of my favourite entertainments was playing with my Nanna’s button tin.1 She was a prolific knitter and so always had a vast selection of interesting buttons, as well as the usual workaday types for mending. To this day, I’m fascinated by buttons…I feel like they’re a rich source of story possibilities.
So — write about a button(s).
Hints: Mundane or magical? Old or modern? A mismatch or a set? Good memories or bad? Who do they belong to? How did they end up in a button tin? Describe the outfit it/they came from.
Next up…a collection of words/phrases (Leanne - you’ve already used a couple of these ones 😉)
a sliver of yellow moon, a hoar frost and an undelivered message
the first thing he said to her and the last thing she thought before he left.
why the dog is barking
These can be taken separately or used together. For the first two, break them down and use one thing, or keep the combination. You get to decide, just have fun.
Zero in on what jumps out at you and run with it - no second-guessing, no rules, just write.
Right…that’s it for this week. Hopefully regularly scheduled programming will return. Until then, happy scribbling!

Life was so much simpler then *sigh*
Buttons! I have one jewelry box full of buttons. I inherited two from my mother-in-law and selected out my favorites and gave the rest to a vintage sewing friend. I believe you shared that prompt in a Brighid session?! It’s now an element in the upcoming book 2 because I rewrote the exercise just slightly for a scene.
Love these. Will definitely give it a go 👍
