Happy Sunday, Scribblers!
Here we are again…where does the time go? This is the second-to-last of the summer season of scribbles and today we’re going with another Story Starter, this time with some dialogue as the jumping-off point. Writing realistic and engaging dialogue is one of those things that can up-level your writing in a huge way, so it’s always beneficial to practice if it’s not something you feel confident with.
Tip: read your dialogue out loud to see if it flows naturally
First, though, for the benefit of the newbies (hello!!) who may not yet have experienced the joys of a Sunday Scribble, let’s review the invitation:
Even if you don’t normally identify as a writer, I invite you to have a noodle in a notebook or on a scrap of paper…just to see what might happen.
Write by hand, if you’re able.
Give yourself a time limit.
No edits.
No second thoughts.
Let your pen take a walk across the page.
Ready?
Let’s begin.
“If we don’t do something soon, the ice cream will melt!”
“Would that really be the end of the world?”
“Depends who you ask, I suppose…”
Try to visualize the scene: who’s speaking? what is their relationship?
What’s your immediate reaction to the scene — what does the scene feel like to you? Comic? Serious? What’s at stake? Are the stakes high or low?
Right! Off you go! Build a scene around the dialogue…or just continue the conversation…or a combination of both. Or maybe write a haiku about ice cream. It’s up to you!
As always, feel free to share in the comments or in a message.
Happy scribbling!
