introducing - the Sunday Scribble
a completely unoriginal title for a completely extraordinary activity
Welcome to the Sunday Scribble!
I’m hoping to release one of these writing prompts every Sunday-ish (note the ‘ish’, I am a contrary creature, after all). I’ve found, over the years, that prompts are an excellent way to either:
a) kick-start the urge to write
b) an easy, zero-stress way into a planned writing session
c) a good way to jostle my brain when it’s stuck in a current WIP
d) a fun way to generate ideas for new stories
I’ll be using an assortment of word and image prompts. I’ll be harvesting the images from around the internet1 and the words either from my brain, or maybe even a line from a poem or song (I will always attribute these, see footnote 🤓).
My general bias is for the moody, the angsty, the magical so if that’s your bag, you’re in the right place.
Even if you don’t identify as a writer, I invite you to have a noodle in a notebook or on a scrap of paper…just to see what might happen.
If you absolutely have no interest - fair enough - you can toggle your preference in the manage subscriptions portion of your settings.2
Write by hand, if you’re able.
Give yourself a time limit.
No edits.
No second thoughts.
Let your pen take a walk across the page.
Ready?
Let’s begin.
Hints: Who lives there? Why are they there? What’s outside the window? Warm or cold? What’s that on the windowsill? What does this photo feel like? What is it’s soundtrack?
Go on.
Have a go.
Report back.

PSA note to pearl-clutchers: I will attribute the images to their original creators where possible, otherwise I’m simply ‘stealing like an artist’ and really, no-one is getting hurt so do keep your hair on. These are mostly images I found via Pinterest and added to an inspiration board. This exercise is for entertainment and edification purposes only. If I were charging. you, I’d use royalty-free images, but since I’m not - well, I’m going to use whatever looks interesting. ☺️
Are you sure you don’t want to give it at try?
I love the questions you put in your prompt hints (this is a great idea, by the way). It reminds me of things I learned in my acting classes about being really observant and then those I picked up reading mysteries -- interpreting character based on surroundings. The kinds of things we have on our window sills, fabrics and the view. Yes, a wonderful idea.
Love this idea! 🌚 Actually what I really love is your description of it, which makes me want to give it a whirl despite my “prompt resistance.” Hah so I suppose I’m just scribbling this here to say this non-writer is down to try! 🌞
